What is the Maryland Bowhunters Society? MBS is a simple yet complex organization that
has existed in Maryland since 1977. We are a group of dedicated bowhunters who have
taken on the responsibility of safe guarding and promoting archery and bowhunting in
Maryland. We are a stakeholder with the MD DNR and as such have a voice in DNR’s bi-
annual review of hunting regulations and bag limits. We gather opinions from our
membership via polls to ensure that we speak on behalf of them. We also are actively
involved with legislative issues and actually influence new game laws that affect YOU the
bowhunter. The MBS has been working tire lesson the Sunday hunting effort in Maryland.
We have made headway in several counties across Maryland to have expanded Sunday
Hunting opportunities and pledge to continue to see all Maryland counties offering that
option. As educated bowhunters we take on the duty of informing and positively educating
the general non hunting public that hunting in general and specifically bowhunting is a safe,
efficient, cost effective and scientifically sound way to control deer herds. We are fortunate
to have a solid, long standing working relationship with MD DNR’s Wildlife & Heritage
Division built on respect and understanding. While we might not always agree our opinions
are valued and listened to.
We actually work with and support DNR and are involved with the MD Legislative Sportsmen’
s Foundation in their efforts to gain additional Sunday hunting. The MBS has also spoken
on defense of other pro-sportsman’s laws such as the Hunting Heritage Bill and the
Conservation Law Enforcement Act of 2010 . While our main focus is bowhunting, we enjoy
a close working relationship with the other sportsman’s groups across MD and the nation.
The legislative process can be a long and difficult journey. MBS remains focused though
and ever vigilant in promoting and protecting Bowhunting in MD. We have developed close
alliances with other powerful local and national level sportsman’s groups that allow us to
stand strong against the threat posed by anti-hunting groups such as the Humane Society
of the United States. They are a large, well-funded organization. Despite their strength, we
are able to stand firm and repel their attacks.
In an effort to promote archery and bowhunting in general, MBS has
launched efforts on several fronts. We worked hard to bring the
National Archery in Schools Program to MD in 2005. We feel this
program has the power to not only make future archers but to actually
change lives. Our children are our future. We feel dedicating
ourselves to teaching archery in schools is the best investment we all
can make. The MBS also actively attends various sporting events held
around the state. We present archery clinics for youngsters and their
families. We also talk to sportsmen and non-hunters to promote
bowhunting. Through our very active MBS Chapters, we are able to
muster volunteers and funds to present these very worth while
programs.
We have chapters set up in various regions of our state. These
chapters attend various events and represent the MBS. They actively
promote the positives and educate the public. Chapters also provide a
great opportunity for like-minded individuals to meet others. Great
friendships have been formed and hunting opportunities shared.
We recently have created a MBS Facebook page open to anyone to
participate. This is yet another outlet to learn and share things that
affect us both positively and negatively as a bowhunter. With the
launch of our new web page, our toll free number, e-mail connectivity,
quarterly meetings and Facebook we feel we have opened up all the
lines of communication to allow our member’s voices to be heard.
The MBS Banquet has become the premier sportsman’s banquet in
MD. Not only is this a great opportunity to make new friends and catch
up with old ones but the menu is fantastic! Door prizes, raffles and
auctions help us raise the much needed funds to promote and protect
bowhunting in MD throughout the year. You won’t want to miss this.
MBS has been publishing what we believe to be the best newsletter in
the country. Rubs and Scrapes magazine is a quarterly publication that
you receive as a paid member. Read about your fellow members’
adventures and catch up on the business of the organization.
The MBS is a partner with North American Bowhunting Coalition. This is
a organization of other state bowhunting organizations which gather for
bi-annually to discuss major legislative events, share ideas and learn
how to improve their efforts as an organization. The MBS has served
as an example for other state bowhunting organizations to follow.
We welcome all ethical sportsmen to consider MBS membership. We
need your help. Numbers matter. Your opinion matters. We welcome
you to join us. The best investment you can make in your bowhunting is
to become an active member of MBS. There is so much to be gained
from being involved with this organization.
Thank’s for stopping by.
