Hunter safety education is mandatory for a hunting license in the state of Maryland. The class covers hunter responsibilty, wildlife conservation, basics of gun, muzzleloading, and bow hunting. It also covers hunting safety as its primary objective. The course is ten hours of class time and four hours of field practical and live fire. The student must get 80% or higher on the exam to pass, and the field practical is judged by the instructor.

Bowhunter Education Program is given to sharpen the bowhunting skills of all bowhunters. The class is a step up from the hunter safety class, and goes into more depth about hunting and bowhunting. This class is mandatory if you want to bowhunt in most western states and in several Canadian provinces. This is normally a one day course with a proficiency test at the end.
